Mentalism is like a maze. Part of learning how to become a mentalist involves knowing how to work your mind. So, how do you train your mind? You do this by playing mind games such as Sudoku, solving complex puzzles or playing chess. This is a state whereby you relax your mind into a state of consciousness, turning away your attention from distracting thoughts and putting your focus on the present moment.

Meditation makes you smarter; it changes pain while relieving depression, meditation is so good to us. The best thing about learning mentalism is that most of the things you will learn will help you to become a better person. You can learn mentalism, not for show, not to please other people but for your own self. That is why I said earlier that mentalism makes you a better person when you master and understand it. Meditation is the reason why monks are always so focused and jovial.

Many mathematical formulas have been invented by monks. Did you know that there is a fine line between your brain and your mind? The brain is the physical organ that houses the mind. The mind is the manifestations of emotion, thought, determination, memory, and imagination that all take place within the brain. Animals have brains but do they have minds? The mind is what differentiates humans from other living things but that does mean all humans think the same.

A good mentalist is able to blend both the brain and the mind to interpret ideas and also make decisions better than other people can. I personally believe that learning mentalism makes you a better person, whether you are learning it for the money or just for fun. If you really want to learn how to become a mentalist, build your confidence first. Believe in yourself first before meeting an audience.

By audience, it can be one person or a hundred people. Confident people achieve way more than timid people, I mean, look around. Who gets the ladies for instance? I believe you can answer that with a blink of an eye.

Confidence is a winner, Confidence takes you places. A sales person who is not confident is better off sleeping than working. A mentalist is a sales person, the only difference as a mentalist is you are selling yourself. Good mentalists will talk to anyone with a tone that exudes confidence so that the other party believes with no doubt what they are being told. A good mentalist stands tall in front of other people and tells them exactly what they want to hear or rather what they think they want to hear.

My friend, do you stammer when talking to your boss? Answer these questions and you will find out where you stand as a future mentalist. The good thing is, you can learn to be confident, it takes time but the bottom line is, you can learn. Your dreams are still valid; you just need to work harder. Teach yourself how to talk to people, earning their respect and making them laugh. Yes, having a sense of humor and making people laugh is part of being a good mentalist.

It involves waking up one morning and becoming who you always imagined yourself to be.

Follow those three steps and your life will never be the same again. You will realize that life is not hard; it only depends on how you take it, and how you handle situations. This is because your career involves doing something you are passionate about. If you want to take your mentalist dreams to a whole new level, choose a career that will enable you to utilize the skills you learned as a mentalist.

This way, you will understand it much better and also earn from it. Leading questions prompt respondents to give the desired answers because of the way they are phrased. Leading questions point the listeners to a certain desired direction.

Something worth noting is that leading questions cannot only be expressed by words but you can also lead people by body language or even your voice tone effects. Leading questions can be both desirable and undesirable, it is very important to know how and when to use them.

Learning mentalism from books and other materials will help you gain the necessary knowledge on how to use leading questions. Leading questions make respondents think or believe that a mentalist has supernatural powers. However you call it, its meaning remains the same. So, what is it? Let me give you an example of how a sales person can use this to their advantage:.

Our opinion is that you should aim to keep things simple, yet polished. Now there are exceptions to this. But for most of your daily performances and interactions, we find three to be the perfect number. You start out with a simple yet intriguing trick to grab their attention. We find three tricks to be ideal. If you go past this amount, you definitely run the risk of overdoing it. Three tricks is also an excellent way to feel out the mood of a potential audience.

If they react well, you could go on to perform a few more effects. If this is the case, you can bow out gracefully without embarrassing yourself. This narrative should run consistently through ALL the tricks.

So rather than jumping from trick to trick, try creating a story—or patter. This story should link each of the three individual effects into one consistent routine. By now, you should have an idea of the routine you want to use. No use putting it off any longer; you need to get out there and perform for someone other than your dog. We know it can be intimidating to start performing these effects to real people for the first time.

But the only way to take your mentalism from amateur to professional standard is through performing in real time for real people. What should you keep in mind while performing for people? The No. How do they react to what you say? How do they respond to the way you perform a specific move?

You borrow some spoons and bend them one by one. For your big finale, you even bend a spoon as the spectator holds it! When you finish, everyone cheers and applauds you. Does that mean it went perfectly? Of course not! If you had been paying close attention to the reactions of the audience DURING the trick, you might have picked up on a few areas that need improvement.

This will give you the most relevant insights on how to improve it for the future. This is a really important one, and one that people learning how to become a mentalist might overlook at first. These questions are a great way to see your magic through the eyes of your audience. When you understand how the audience sees your work—you learn what you need to know to improve it. On the whole, it went well. But, after you finish the trick, a member of the audience comes up to you and says this:.

This is definitely NOT something that you want your audience to be thinking. If they believe the spoons are fake, they will be much less impressed by the rest of the trick. The solution is obvious. You need to improve the way you show your audience the spoons and make it much more apparent that they ARE ordinary. So, in the end, you improve your routine vastly just by listening to a simple question from a member of the audience.

You can apply this to ALL your effects. We already discussed how important it is to watch the reactions of your audience during your tricks. What your audiences SAY. Getting the right patter for your routine can be a long, frustrating process. Ask any magician how many times a member of their audience has made a humorous comment or observation during their tricks.

It happens all the time! As it turns out, you can actually use this to your advantage. Next time you perform, make a mental note each time someone makes a comment. If it gets a good reaction, make a note of it and consider using it yourself in future performances! These are a few reliable ways to better your routines.

Simply praying that everything will go to plan is NOT going to cut it. Like it or not, you are going to mess up sooner or later.

Imagine the magician has told a spectator to pick a card, without showing it to them. They then place the card in the deck and shuffle the cards. Well, this is the perfect time for the use of multiple outs. The magician could simply reach into his pocket and pull out his Invisible Deck or Second Sight Deck , depending on the situation.

He could then tell the spectator that he actually had a strange premonition the night before. Within this premonition, he had a feeling that his magic trick would mess up, and he would get their card wrong. As he spreads through the cards, the spectator sees that EVERY single card is face up…apart from one. The magician removes the single face-down card and asks them to turn it over. This is because mentalism is a lot more variable and fluid of an art form than regular magic.

A lot of the time, rather than having a clear end effect in mind, you adapt to each spectator and create the routine around THEM. Focus first on gaining a practical understanding of the techniques involved in mentalism. Your aim might be to work locally and do gigs for restaurants, weddings, or corporate events. What better way to get a foothold in the industry than by getting to know the other magicians doing precisely the same thing?

Or, your aim might be to eventually have your own act or even perform as part of a magic show. You can still definitely benefit from interacting with other mentalists. You can gain useful insights on how to strengthen your existing effects or even completely fresh ideas for new effects.

Here are our recommendations…. You can perform many book tests impromptu, such as this one. We would recommend Booked, by Steve Valentine, but there is a whole range of solid options out there. The Outlaw Effects book tests such as Luna always get high marks, as does some of the work put out by Larry Becker. Most of you probably know the Invisible Deck as a card trick. Some of the best mentalists in the world use cards in their effects.

So the Invisible Deck, for example, works nicely in a lot of mentalism routines. In fact, the most basic presentation of the Invisible Deck is a classic mentalism plot. The spectator thinks of a card any card in their head, without revealing it to the magician.

When the spectator names their card out loud for the first time, the magician shows them the deck. All the cards are face up…except one. The face-down card is taken out of the deck. Any guesses on what the card is? There are hundreds of ways you could spin this presentation. You could use Second Sight for a very similar effect with cleaner handling; check that one out here. Magic is really fun. It may seem far off, but one day you might be a professional mentalist.

He would now trust that this person is either divorced or separated and right-handed. Trust those snap judgments! Look for physical cues in others. A mentalist's work lies in stirring memories and causing the "tells" to appear, even if the person cannot bring to mind the information.

Remember that although someone may say they do not remember something, the brain records everything. As such, the information is there, but just not accessible to that person at that time. Use yourself as your first guinea pig. While each person is a bit different, tells are called as such because they're usually consistent.

So get in front of a mirror and start studying your own face. Here's a few things to look for: When you think of a positive memory, your pupils should dilate. When you think of a negative experience, they should constrict. Imagine both of these scenarios and see what happens. Think of an answer to this question: What do you like about going to the beach? Once you've come up with your answer, note where you looked.

If you said something like fire, you probably visualized it and looked up. If you said something like the sounds and the smells, you probably remained at eye level. If you said the sand in your hands, you may have looked down.

Visual answers generally go up, aural stays level, and hands-on memories draw gaze downward. Make yourself nervous. How does it manifest in your body? What is your heart doing? Your breathing? What are you doing with your hands? Now run through other emotions too -- sadness, happiness, stress, etc.

Detect lies. Much of detecting lies is seeing the tells we just covered. In fact, that's what a polygraph does -- it measures blood pressure, pulse, and perspiration. But you can also do things a polygraph can't do -- like see when people aren't looking you in the eye, twiddling their thumbs, or being inconsistent in their verbal and non-verbal behavior.

A good thing to master is detecting micro-expressions. They're often feelings of distress or negative feelings they don't want other people to see for one reason or another. Pay attention to their entire body -- how much they're gulping, if they're touching their nose or mouth, what they're doing with their hands, fingers, and feet, and how they're standing in relation to you. Are they angled toward the door? They probably subconsciously want to get away! Ask leading questions. Persuading people is a huge part of being a mentalist.

At the very least, you're persuading them you are a mentalist! A simple way to do this is to ask leading questions. John Edward and other TV personalities are great at this. They start with, "I'm seeing a Does that mean anything to anyone? Then, once someone does, he'll ask questions like, "You were very close to him, weren't you?

He's just asking very vague questions and the person is filling in the gaps for him! Practice casually sweeping the room with an observant gaze. Look for all detail in the environment. Observe all human interaction, from the one-on-one to how the room is grouped.

Often just a ten-second look into a room can tell you how each person is feeling. If you see one or two people near the door, they may be socially anxious. See a person whose body language is clearly focused on someone else? They're interested in that person, probably sexually. And if everyone is aligned toward one person in the room, you've found your alpha. And that's just three examples. If you can, record something. Start with small segments, observe, record, then view again several times to find what information you missed the first time.

Part 2. Since people are different, you'll be a lot more effective in your readings if you have a baseline first. And you'll know how receptive they're feeling toward you! An easy example is think of naturally flirty people. When they're comfortable, they may be touching, laughing, and poking away at someone they find attractive. Other people, while comfortable, might consider that a violation of a person's bubble.

Both people are feeling the same way, they just show it in very different ways. Be confident. How do politicians get elected? What makes a salesman effective? Who gets the ladies? We may think it has something to do with smarts or with looks and those definitely don't hurt , but what it really boils down to is confidence. When you're confident enough, it doesn't even occur to other people to question your judgment.

What you're really selling here is yourself. People are looking to you to be convinced -- they're not looking for the most accurate or logical information. When you realize it's not what you say, it's how you say it, a lot of the pressure falls away. The fact of the matter is that people tell us things way more often than we realize.

Our memories would improve and we would make connections we didn't see before. That's what mentalists do! An important part of listening and being an effective mentalist is reading between the lines.

Seeing what people really mean when they're talking. If your friend walked up to you and said, "Oh my gosh, I worked out soooooo hard today," they're actually saying, "Please give me a pat on the back. I need to be told I'm fit. Act natural. What it boils down to is that you're really putting on a show. So instead of pretending to be someone you're not and making this dramatic scene about it, just be yourself!
